Cleanliness and Contamination Control Engineer
ReOrbit is looking for a Cleanliness and Contamination Control Engineer. You will develop, implement, and own the facility’s Cleanliness & Contamination Control Plan (CCCP), including cleanliness requirement specifications (CRS), procedures for all integration steps, and compliance with ISO 14644 and ECSS-Q-ST-70-01. You will oversee cleanroom monitoring, lead contamination prevention during spacecraft integration, train and certify personnel, and ensure adherence to cleanliness standards and best practices.
It's an exciting chance to join a dynamic start-up, with the opportunity to make a real impact, to reach our goal of pushing the boundaries of space data transfer.
Responsibilities
Define and enforce cleanliness levels for hardware (particulate, molecular/NVR, and outgassing), personnel, tools, materials, and the cleanroom itself.
Daily/weekly monitoring and trending of the cleanroom environment: particle counters, air samplers, witness plates, swab tests, QCM (if optical/thermal-critical), humidity, and non-volatile residue (NVR) measurements.
Lead contamination prevention during all MAIT activities: satellite assembly, harness routing, payload integration, thermal vacuum prep, bake-outs, protective bagging/covers, purging, and transport packaging.
Train, certify, and audit all integration technicians and visitors on gowning hygiene, behavior, material selection, and “clean-as-you-go” practices; run regular toolbox talks and contamination-awareness drills.
Investigate any contamination events, perform root-cause analysis, write non conformance reports, and implement corrective/preventive actions (CAPA).
Manage incoming hardware inspection (supplier cleanliness verification), hardware cleaning methods qualification, and protective measures for storage/shipping.
Maintain cleanliness documentation, generate cleanliness certificates at key milestones, and support customer or regulatory audits.
Coordinate with the small team on facility upkeep (HEPA filter changes, cleaning schedules, airflow mapping) and budget for monitoring consumables/equipment
Skills and Requirements
Deep knowledge of ISO 14644 series, ECSS-Q-ST-70-01 and material outgassing (ASTM E595).
Experience with contamination monitoring tools (particle counters, optical microscopes, swab kits, NVR measurement, possibly QCM or RGA).
Familiarity with bake-out processes, precision cleaning methods (IPA, plasma, CO₂ snow, etc.), and material compatibility for aerospace hardware.
Ability to read engineering drawings and work with integration teams on real-time decisions
Bachelor’s degree (minimum) in Aerospace, Mechanical, Chemical, Materials Engineering, Physics, or related field. Master’s or cleanroom specific certification (e.g., IEST, ISO 14644 training) is a plus.
What does ReOrbit do?
ReOrbit builds the foundation for the next generation of space applications by transforming satellites into truly intelligent, interconnected platforms, defined by software. Our satellite design philosophy revolves around the idea that satellites must network, communicate with each other and thus improve mission efficiency. How can this be achieved? Thanks to a flexible software-first architecture, where all these aspects are dealt with upfront in the mission concept, as integrated functionalities.
ReOrbit’s top-notch team of software engineers and system architects develop in-house software, procure hardware from the best-in-class suppliers, and seamlessly integrate the components to create flexible and secure satellites. Today, we are a rapidly growing company building a very strong multidisciplinary team to support our activities. We are headquartered in Helsinki, Finland with a subsidiaries in Bristol, UK and Bariloche, Argentina.
